CEO & PRESIDENT

•The Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM) seeks an inspiring and dynamic leader to advance the mission of the Museum. Established in 1882, MPM is one of the nation’s leading institutions for exhibition, education, and research in the natural sciences, anthropology and history. S/he will have a proven track record leading a complex, multi-stakeholder organization and a sincere passion and commitment for world cultures and natural history. •The Milwaukee Public Museum, one of the largest in the United States, is a museum of human and natural history providing a dynamic and stimulating environment for learning, with something to excite and challenge visitors with a diversity of interests. •The Museum Center hosts 650,000 visitors per year and is conveniently located in downtown Milwaukee, just minutes from the interstate. From its modest beginnings in 1882, the Milwaukee Public Museum currently houses over 4.6 million specimens and artifacts. Permanent exhibits are contained in three and a half floors of exhibit area, with additional space for traveling and temporary blockbuster exhibits. •Exhibits and education programs renowned for their innovation and diversity are offered in the 400,000 square foot facility, which includes the IMAX© Theater and Daniel M. Soref Planetarium, restaurant, retail shops, courtyard and other amenities for 650,000 visitors annually. The museum operates with a budget of $13 million, a full/part-time staff of approximately 150, a 29-member board, (18 elected members, 9 County-appointed members, and 2 union members) and more than 500 volunteers. •Among the president’s responsibilities will be to study the institution, its needs, potential, and priorities and, in concert with staff and board, develop and implement its strategic agenda for the next decade including leading the capital campaign. •A private not-for-profit organization, Milwaukee Public Museum Inc was created in 1992 to run the Museum for Milwaukee County under a lease-management agreement. The Museum’s county employees, of which some were unionized, were transferred to the new corporation. This unique partnership continues to this day and MPM is contractually subject to most aspects of the Wisconsin open meetings and record laws. A primary responsibility of the President/CEO is managing the governance implications and relationships of this unique partnership. •The candidate must have demonstrated success in general management with a track record of progressive responsibility as a visionary leader and a strong effective manager; have outstanding fundraising, external relations, revenue generation, and interpersonal skills; and enthusiasm for public education and scientific research.
