MPM Position Description for Bug Patrol Volunteer
PURPOSE: To welcome visitors and engage them in conversation about the bugs in the exhibit.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be willing to learn about arthropods to accurately respond to visitor questions, learn about bug health and handle insects. Must be 18 years of age.
RESPONSIBILITIES / TASKS: Interpret the exhibits and handle some of the live bugs so visitors can see them up close. Ask questions to encourage interactive responses and encourage visitors to properly touch or hold a live bug. Record your hours of service and schedule yourself for future shifts in the volunteer lounge.
HOURS and AVAILABILITY / MINIMUM COMMITMENT REQUIRED: Four hours per session with a minimum of 12 sessions per year. This is a seven-day per week opportunity. Notify the Volunteer Coordinator if absent for a scheduled shift.
TRAINING: Shadow an experienced volunteer during a normal bug patrol session until you feel confident to go solo. Handouts provided.
SUPPORT: The Bug Patrol Coordinator will contact you monthly to see how your experience is going and determine your availability to volunteer the coming month. He/she will explain the calendaring process and respond to your questions.
DRESS CODE: Business casual. A bug shirt is provided.
CONTACT PERSON: Volunteer Coordinator will conduct interview & orientation of MPM. Position Coordinator will train you, help with the calendar process, communicate with you regularly, and be your primary contact for this position.
