MPM Position Description for Butterfly Corps Volunteer

PURPOSE:   Welcome visitors to the Puelicher Butterfly Wing and enhance their experiences by engaging them in interactive questions.

QUALIFICATIONS:   A willingness to study and have an accurate understanding of basic scientific information about butterflies and moths. Have a working knowledge of the vivarium and related components of the exhibit, and demonstrate a warm, welcoming approach to the general public. Be comfortable working in the +80 degree temperature of the vivarium. (Enjoy a touch of summer all year long!) Must be 18.

RESPONSIBILITIES:   Increase visitor's understanding of MPM's tropical butterflies and enhance their enjoyment of the vivarium. Circulate through the entire exhibit, answering questions and engaging the visitors with "did you know" questions. Record your hours of service and schedule yourself for future shifts in the volunteer lounge.

HOURS and AVAILABILITY / MINIMUM COMMITMENT REQUIRED:   Work a 4-hour shift for a minimum of 12 sessions per year. Two volunteers are encouraged to attend each day especially during Christmas and Easter vacations and M-F September-May for school groups. Notify the Volunteer Coordinator if absent for a scheduled shift.

TRAINING:   Basic orientation provided by the Butterfly Corps Coordinator. Shadow an established butterfly corps volunteer until you feel confident to go solo. Familiarize yourself with the written information describing the vivarium and all related components of the exhibit. Handouts provided.

SUPPORT:   Butterfly Corps Chairperson will be the primary contact and will help with the calendar process.

DRESS CODE:   Short sleeved shirt and light weight long pants

CONTACT PERSON:   Volunteer Coordinator will conduct interview & orientation of MPM. Position Coordinator will train you, help with the calendar process, communicate with you regularly, and be your primary contact for this position.
