MPM Position Description for Reptile Handler

PURPOSE:   To enhance visitor experiences in the Rainforest exhibit.

QUALIFICATIONS:   Must be comfortable handling large reptiles and willing to learn about lizards and accurately respond to visitor questions. Must be at least 18 years old.

RESPONSIBILITIES / TASKS:
  • Hand carry MPM's green iguana in the Rainforest exhibit, so visitors can see "Lizzy" up close.
  • Ask visitors questions to encourage interactive responses.
  • Record your hours of service and schedule yourself for future shifts with the Education Programs Manager.

HOURS and AVAILABILITY / MINIMUM COMMITMENT REQUIRED:   One hour per week Monday-Friday. This volunteer opportunity can be linked to a second volunteer opportunity on the same day to effectively utilize your time and money.

TRAINING:   Spend several sessions getting aquainted with MPM's green iguana. Shadow an experienced volunteer/staff member as many times as you need until you feel confident to go solo. The Education Programs Manager conducts training.

SUPPORT:   The Education staff can respond to your questions about "Lizzy." Email the Education Programs Manager with scheduling questions and absences.

DRESS CODE:   Casual, but no jeans. A tightly woven shirt is recommended. No jewelry.

CONTACT PERSON:   Volunteer Coordinator will conduct interview & orientation of MPM. Education Programs Manager will train you, help with the calendar process, communicate with you via email, and be your primary contact for this position.
