MPM Position Description for Temporary Exhibits

PURPOSE:   Assist the general public with educational and hospitality needs related to this exhibit.

QUALIFICATIONS:   Ability to interact comfortably with the general public. Depending on the exhibit, ability to bend and lift at least 20 lbs and transfer from stool to standing.

RESPONSIBILITIES: for two separate positions:
(1) Staff an artifact cart, called a Stop Spot Cart: Study the items on the cart by attending training and using resources provided. If you find additional information on the internet or other resources, verify the content with an MPM educator before using. Use interactive techniques to engage visitors in the artifacts and/or models on the Stop Spot Cart. Record your hours of service and schedule yourself for future shifts in the volunteer lounge.

(2) Staff the Ask Me! Desk: Attend training on the Temporary Exhibit to understand how it will function at MPM. Learn how to access information in the Ask Me! Binder at the desk. Assist visitors with questions on the exhibit, as well as getting around the museum in general. Record your hours of service and schedule yourself for future shifts in the volunteer lounge.

HOURS and AVAILABILITY / MINIMUM COMMITMENT REQUIRED:   Work a 4-hour shift 1-2 times per month during the run of the exhibit. This is a seven-day per week opportunity.

TRAINING:   Both positions need to attend the "Overview of the Exhibit" training, as well as training for the specific area of your choosing: Stop Spot Cart or Ask Me! Desk.

SUPPORT:   The contact people listed below will respond to your concerns. The staff people working the exhibit can help with on-the-spot needs; most are temporary hires trained for this specific exhibit.

DRESS CODE:   White or beige top with black or dark bottom. Or, the opposite, black or dark top with khaki bottom. No open-toed shoes. (MPM-qualified docents working this position will wear their blue jackets.)

CONTACT PERSON:
  • The Volunteer Coordinator will conduct an interview & orientation to MPM.
  • The Temporary Exhibit Volunteer Coordinator will schedule and conduct training sessions for the exhibit (repeated weekdays and weekends) and be the primary contact for the Stop Spot volunteers.
  • The Ask Me! Desk volunteers will attend the overview training scheduled by the Temporary Exhibit Coordinator, but the primary contact is the Ask Me! Desk Coordinator.
