The Museum's History Department has collections totaling more than 250,000 objects, ranging from Egyptian mummies to 20th century Milwaukee clothing and manufactures. They chronicle the literate societies of Europe, Africa and Asia, as well as Euro-American culture.

Additionally, the archaeology of the Near East and Mediterranean (Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome primarily) is covered.

Major collections include the Dietz typewriter collection, the Nunnemacher arms collection, the Uihlein postage stamp collection and the decorative arts collection, as well as significant excavated materials from Tell Hadidi, Syria.
