Wisconsin Freshwater Sponge Species
Our research has documented the presence of 13 species in Wisconsin.
Some evidence supports the possible presence of two additional species in the state. For the one (Heteromeyenia latitenta), the only documentation is a single gemmule found on the bottom of Lake Mendota, and for the other (Spongilla aspinosa), Wisconsin specimens have not been conclusively differentiated from atypical S. lacustris.
