Anthropology

Dawn Scher Thomae

Anthropology Collections Manager

Dawn interned at museums in Boston, Denver, and Washington D.C. and worked at the Logan Museum of Anthropology before coming back to her hometown of Milwaukee and the MPM in 1987. She has a B.A. in Anthropology and Museum Studies from Beloit College and an M.S. in Anthropology from the UW-Milwaukee.

George Ulrich

Curator Emeritus, African and Oceanic Ethnology

George Ulrich is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and has been curator of African and Pacific Ethnology at the Milwaukee Public Museum since 1981. In addition to his curatorial duties, he teaches courses in Anthropology, Art History and Museum Studies for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.

Conservation

Christine Del Re

Senior Conservator

Christine Del Re received a B.Sc. in Archaeological Conservation and Materials Science from the Institute of Archaeology, University of London, England in 1980. Following contractual appointments at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC and the Mississippi River Museum in Memphis, TN, Ms. Del Re worked for five years at the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in the conservation of archaeological and ethnographic materials.

Patricia Coorough Burke is an Associate Curator of Paleontology and member of the Board of Directors at the Milwaukee Public Museum. Currently, she is working on the educational aspects of the Geology Section's distance-learning project as well as continuing several research projects.

History Collections Manager

Muchka has been a member of the History Department staff since 1991. He earned a Master of Arts degree in Public History. He also holds certificates in Museum Studies and Non-Profit Organization Management.

Invertebrate

Susan S. Borkin

Director of Special Projects

Sue Borkin has worked as a curator since 1975, overseeing the butterfly and moth collection totalling over 250,000 specimens. She holds a Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her current research focuses on the ecology and conservation of Wisconsin butterflies.

Joan P. Jass

Curator of Noninsect Invertebrates

Joan Jass curates all of the non-insect invertebrates, a collection of over 200,000 specimens. Mollusks, crustaceans and arachnids--in that order--are the largest groups in this collection. Basic information on most of these specimens has been entered into a series of datasets with the help of student and volunteer assistants. Current research interests involve Wisconsin mollusks and crustaceans.

Robert W. Henderson

Senior Curator of Herpetology

I am senior curator of herpetology in the Section of Vertebrate Zoology. I received my academic training at the University of Kansas, long a center for studies in Neotropical herpetology, and also the home institution of Dr. Henry S. Fitch who is, essentially, the “father” of snake ecology.
