About Dawn Scher Thomae
Dawn interned at museums in Boston, Denver, and Washington D.C. and worked at the Logan Museum of Anthropology before coming back to her hometown of Milwaukee and the MPM in 1987. She has a B.A. in Anthropology and Museum Studies from Beloit College and an M.S. in Anthropology from the UW-Milwaukee.

As collections manager, Dawn's primary responsibility is the care, documentation, and artifact research of the African, Oceanic, Native American, South and Central American ,and a large chunk of the archaeology collections.
She also trains and supervises the volunteers, interns, work-study students, and temporary employees in the section. Her interests include Native American ethnographic material culture, Native Americans in the 20th century, Museum Studies and Central and South American ethnology.
Here is a list of some of Dawn's responsibilities:
- Answer inquiries from the public
- Identify artifacts and specimens that people bring in to the Museum
- Develop and give educational programs for children and adults on-site and off-site
- Attend meetings inside the building on issues ranging from exhibit and audience development to collection software
- Give presentations at professional meetings
- Sit on thesis committees
- Mentor aspiring professionals in the Museum and Anthropology fields
- Act as consultant or advisor for other museums
- Serve on professional committees
- Write and review grants for research, programs, and projects
- Work closely with other professionals in the Museum on various projects
- Develop, renovate, and maintain exhibits
- Loan collections to other museums for research and exhibits
- Work with researchers who come from all over the world to examine our collections and documentation
In addition to her anthropology duties, Dawn also teaches graduate Museum Studies courses for UW-Milwaukee, is the Museum Internship Coordinator, and is involved in a variety of educational programs.
She is very active in the state and regional museum associations and is the facilitator of Wisconsin Museums Week. Dawn's project, Wisconsin Warriors: Interviews with Native American Veterans, is reprinted from LORE magazine.
