Lady Elgin Rediscovery Expedition 2008
|
The Lady Elgin Rediscovery Expedition 2008 is a partnership between the Milwaukee Public Museum, Harry Zych, the Lady Elgin Foundation and other community members. An educational program designed to bring about awareness and interest in Great Lakes maritime history, the Expedition brings students directly to the wreck of the Lady Elgin through the use of interactive video-conferencing technologies. These students will essentially swim alongside the dive team exploring the site, a group led by Harry Zych, owner and founder of the wreck, and put together multi-media packages highlighting their findings as a final project.
Known as the “Titanic of the Great Lakes,” the Lady Elgin is a historic paddleboat steamer that sank in Lake Michigan in 1860. Today, the Lady Elgin is still a source of fascination and a treasure trove of stories. A diverse team of divers and local experts make up the expedition team that explored the Lady Elgin, and this team is helping bring the ship to life for local students who act as the "official reporters" documenting the teams' discoveries. Students interview the divers in real-time through videoconference technology, as well as conduct research to uncover exactly what happened on September 8, 1860: Who was onboard; why is this important today; and how does this disaster connect to their hometowns?
This interactive website is designed to support teachers and students in their classroom and to feature the outcomes of the students' hard work, their finished projects.
