Frequently Asked Questions about Participating in the Big Read

How does this program fit with my classroom objectives?

Big Read programming connects to classroom objectives through Language Arts, History and Science Standards. Included in this packet are G.R.A.S.P.S. for Language Arts in class programming as well as a chart connecting passages and discussions found in “The Call of the Wild” to Science Learning Targets. The Milwaukee Big Read is an opportunity to bring a themed adventure to your students as part of what you are already doing in your classroom.

Is there curriculum included and what grade level is it for?

Yes, curriculum is included with this programming and is intended for grades 4 and higher, but adaptations are available for younger audiences as well as special needs students. The curriculum for younger students will include templates and worksheets that will make discussion and activities more enjoyable.

What is involved?

In order to participate in this programming, students will be asked to read “The Call of the Wild” and participate in one book discussion hosted by either the Milwaukee Public Library, the Milwaukee Public Museum or with a teacher or school librarian. Reader guides are available at no cost to teachers for their students from the Big Read project. Additional free opportunities include distance learning programs, field trips to the Museum and Library and online virtual games. Grant funds are limited and will be awarded on a first come first serve basis for all free program opportunities. To get started simply fill out the registration form.

How do I find out about upcoming programming in the area?

By registering for the Big Read program through the Museum, you will receive e-mail updates of upcoming programs and opportunities along with a detailed calendar. This will inform you of all upcoming events found in the Milwaukee area.

Are any materials required for the programming?

All participants will need access if not their own copy of “The Call of the Wild” in order to engage with other students and participants in the programs, as well as understand the material included. Additional resources available include a Reader’s Guide, a Teacher’s Guide and a radio broadcast discussing the book. Some hard copy materials will be available, but all can also be accessed and downloaded electronically from the National Endowment for the Arts: Big Read, website www.neabigread.org.

What equipment do I need to participate?

Many of the programs that offered by the museum are either on-site and/or included with Museum admission. If you do decide to participate in the Distance Learning videoconferencing programming opportunities, your class will need to have access to standard videoconferencing equipment H.323. If your school does not have access to these resources, programs will be video streamed on our website, which can be accesses by any computer with a broadband internet connection. Your school IT personnel can tell you if this is available if you are not sure. Some programs will be archived and can be viewed at a later date to accommodate your class schedules, or for any students absent the day of programming. Ask ahead time if this option is available for the program you register for.

Do I have to pay to participate?

No, most associated costs are covered by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Milwaukee Public Museum and Milwaukee Public Library, and much of the programming that is listed in the curriculum guide is free of charge.
