The Milwaukee Public Museum Celebrates 125 Years
2009 marks the 125th anniversary of the opening of the Milwaukee Public Museum in 1884. To celebrate this milestone, the Museum will be offering programming and special events throughout the year that focus on our 125 years of shared history with the people of Milwaukee.

Exhibit Highlights – Did You Know?
In honor of our 125th Anniversary, Milwaukee Public Museum curators wrote special exhibit labels highlighting some amusing, bizarre and interesting facts about the Museum, its dioramas and objects. Stop in to step up to learn the back story about some of your favorite exhibits. You can also visit our Did You Know? page for some interesting selections.

"Thanks for the Memories" - Memory Book
What does the Museum mean to you? Share your memories with us! Whether your experiences were funny, scary (granny in the Streets of Old Milwaukee?) or insightful, we want to know how the Museum has been a part of your life. Write them in our memory book outside the Museum Marketplace or check back soon to write your memories online!

Memories of a Museum on the Move Photo Exhibit
An exhibit of historical Museum photographs are displayed in the Fred and Jolly (Elizabeth) Ott Member Services Center in the Museum concourse. The exhibit includes more than a dozen photographs showing interior and exterior shots of the Museum at all four of its locations: the German English Academy, Exposition Building, Milwaukee Public Library and our current building.

Anniversary Mural
In celebration of our 125th anniversary, the Museum commissioned a commemorative mural to be painted near the third floor elevator lobby. Brooklyn Henke, a painting student from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, worked on the mural for several months, and finished it for unveiling at our Anniversary Party on June 13. Stop by to see the finished piece!

Student Exhibit – Cabinets of Curiosity
Themed in honor of the Museum's 125th anniversary, Cabinets of Curiosity illustrates the vast scope of MPM collections by juxtaposing extremes – like an ancient meteorite next to a newly-minted coin – and by highlighting objects with unique stories or functionality not easily recognized by the modern eye.
The annual student exhibit is the culmination of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee/MPM Museum Studies Program, a cooperative graduate certificate program between UW-Milwaukee and the Museum.

125 Years – 125 Objects
A virtual exhibit of 125 amazing items from the MPM collections is now in the works! This electronic exhibit will include a photo and description of each item, many of which are not currently on display.
