It's All in the Details: The Legacy of the Fifield Collection

Objects in the Fifield collection were created prior to Columbus' arrival in the New World, and are thus considered "pre-Columbian." Great cultures such as the Olmec, Maya, and Aztec were just a few societies in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, and the diversity, social institutions, and technology of these peoples are apparent in the material evidence archaeologists and collectors are still uncovering today. Such artifacts can provide many clues about ancient society: paint on vase can teach us about early chemistry, and a stone yoke can hint at what Mayans wore while playing their famous, ruthless ball game.
Items in It's All in the Details: The Legacy of the Fifield Collection were purchased by Thomas and Marilyn Fifield and donated to MPM in 2006. The Fifields had a great interest in the history, ecology and culture of Central America, and were active in the Friends of the Milwaukee Public Museum. Thomas Fifield was also the editor of LORE, a museum publication. The exhibit is not only a display of objects, but symbolizes the generous nature of donors, like the Fifields, who have helped shape the collections and exhibits of the Milwaukee Public Museum for 125 years.
Located in three exhibit cases on the second floor, It's All in the Details will be on display through June 2011.
