ABC's of Schoolgirl Samplers: Children, Education, and Needlework

Schoolgirl samplers are one of the most recognizable and beloved American needle arts. Samplers were created by young girls as part of their formal education demonstrating needle handiwork, literacy, moral education and historical/geographic understanding. A selection of a dozen samplers from the Museum's Clothing and Textile Collection provides an opportunity to enjoy and examine the handiwork of early 19th century American girls. This is a limited run exhibit due to the fragility and age of the textiles.

ABC's of Schoolgirl Samplers is located on the first floor, center gallery, from August 21 – November 29, 2009.
