Early Explorers Camps for K4 & K5

MPM offers a variety of early learning camps for children entering K4 or K5 in Fall 2017.

Butterflies, dinosaurs, jungle animals, and stars are a just a few of the exciting topics our early explorers will discover. These one-day morning or afternoon camps, provide ample opportunities for our campers to have fun and be creative while learning about their world.

When: Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 9:30 -11:00 a.m. or 1:30 - 3:00 p.m.
Cost per camp: $25, $20 members. Fee covers both child and adult, and includes general admission for the entire day.
Who can come: Parents or adult chaperones are welcome, but not required, to join their child for these sessions at no additional cost. Unregistered children are not allowed to attend, including siblings and infants.
Note: Camps are structured specifically for stated grade range. Campers must be entering K4 or K5 at the time of their registered camps. No exceptions.

Dinosaurs 101
June 20
9:30 – 11:00 a.m.

Young dinosaur enthusiasts will be thrilled to hold real dinosaur fossils in their hands! We will examine MPM’s collection of prehistoric creatures, compare meat eaters and plant eaters as well as learn how each survived.

Art Around the World

MPM is filled with different forms of art and artifacts. What do you consider art? We will travel the globe in search of objects from around the world and create our own exhibit-inspired works.

Butterflies

We love butterflies for their beautiful, brightly colored wings, but that’s just half of their story. Join us as we follow the life cycle of this magical insect, from egg to wings!

Geology
June 28
9:30 - 11:00 a.m. or 1:30 - 3:00 p.m.

Junior geologists will discover how to compare and classify many different types of rocks and minerals. Each camper will take home the start of their own rock collection that can be added to for years to come!

Building a Collection
June 29

Where did that come from? How did it get here? Campers will discover how museums gather and use collections as well as think about how to build a collections of their own.

Ooey Gooey Science
July 12
9:30 - 11:00 a.m.

Campers will roll up their sleeves and experiment with different activities that will include the ooey, the gooey and even the yucky! We will do some basic experiments and make a lot of observations and predictions.

Bugs Alive!
July 13

Discover why bugs are so important to our environment. Campers will get up close and personal with live bugs from around the world and learn how they defend themselves, what they eat, and where they live.

Paleontology

Paleontologists face a lot of questions in the field and we’re digging up the answers! Campers will look at the tools and techniques used to plot a dinosaur dig and discover unknown truths about these majestic creatures.

Digging Wisconsin
July 19

How do archeologists do their work? Campers will look at the tools these science detectives use and do some digging of their own as they piece together the stories of Wisconsin’s past.

Building an Exhibit
July 20

You love visiting MPM to see its awesome exhibits, and now it’s time to make one yourself. Come learn how an exhibit is built, why objects are chosen, and where some of the artifacts come from.

Streets of Old Milwaukee

Compare the differences between life today and that at the turn of the 20th century. Campers will visit the stores and home in the Streets and handle real artifacts that people used in work and play.

Nocturnal Rainforest
July 27

What happens in the rainforest when the sun goes down? Turns out, the rainforest never sleeps! Campers will explore the different layers of the rainforest and the animals that live and eat at night.

Deep in the Jungle

Campers will use all their sense as we discover what jungle life is all about! Listen for animal sounds, taste and smell jungle fruit, and see and feel what jungle animals do as they go about their day. Why is the sloth so slow? Who is the king of the rain forest? Find out the answers to this and more!

Ocean Explorer

The ocean is one of the most interesting places on earth! Campers will learn about our amazing ocean ecosystems, dive deep into ocean activities, and visit our undersea exhibitions to discover the secrets of the depths.

Visit MPM’s planetarium to learn about our solar system! See moons, constellations, and discover what makes Earth unique from the rest of the planets in our solar system.


FAQs

Where and when do I check in?
The check-in table is located near the MPM café. Check-in begins at 9:00 a.m., but please be prepared to stay with your child until camp begins at 9:30 a.m. Activities will be provided during this time and it’s an ideal time address bathroom needs. At 9:30 a.m. the group will proceed to the Early Explorers classroom. You may stay and participate at no additional cost, or leave and return at pick up time. Unregistered children are not allowed to attend camp (this includes siblings and/or infants).

Where and when do I pick up my child(ren)?
Pick up is located in the Early Explorer classroom (see map) at 11:00 a.m. sharp. There is no early drop-off or late pick-up for the Early Explorer campers.
