Maya and Egyptian Pyramids: Just the Facts

There are some intriguing similarities between the ancient Maya and ancient Egyptian civilizations --  though we know that the two never had any contact. But one thing they shared is the pyramid, which became a central architectural feature in both cultures. So, what are the similarities and differences between Maya and Egyptian pyramids? Test your knowledge of both as you try and sort a list of facts and decide which are true for which pyramids!

Maya and Egyptian Writing Systems: Glyphs of the Gods

Both the Maya and the Egyptians created complex writing systems using hieroglyphs—a readable symbol used in written communication. Though they had no contact with each other, their writing systems do share a few similarities.

In this activity, we explore what’s similar—as well as different—in the writing forms of both civilizations as a way to better understand them. Using a selection of modern symbols, visitors create their own hieroglyphic sequence that best expresses their identity.
