Digitization: Education and Public Outreach
The Education and Public Outreach Digitization intern will work with a multidisciplinary team to help enhance public access to our collections data through the MPM Digitization Project. The internship will provide hands-on experience with museum educators, collections materials, the digitization process, and our growing public outreach endeavors. The intern will be paired with another digitization intern whose focus will be collections. As the Digitization Project is primarily focused on natural history collections, an interest in biology and science communication is preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities
Education:
Work with education staff to understand department functions, curriculum development, and science communication in a museum setting
Digitization:
- Digital capture of collections—photography, data entry, and specimen handling
- Work with collections staff and partner intern to research and develop web content for the digitization project blog
- Assist staff during MPM’s first DataBlitz
Required Competencies
- Strong interest in education and science communication
- Prior experience in one or more of the following:
- museum education
- communications or marketing
- biology or science
- Attention to detail
- Digital literacy (experience with computers and database programs)
- Good interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
- Ability to work well on a team
Expected Learned Skills/Experience
- An understanding of how digitization enhances scientific and public access to museum collections
- Experience with handling and digitizing collections materials
- Researching and writing web content for digitization public outreach
- An understanding of how different disciplines and departments work to support collections stewardship and science communication
- Experience with citizen science programming
