Ichthyology (fishes) collection is the largest in the department with about 685,000 catalogued specimens in over 35,000 lots and representing more than 2000 species and 300 families. The majority of the collection is Wisconsin freshwater fishes (29,000 lots), but more than 26 U.S. states and 15 countries are represented.

This President's Day, February 19, our Educators will be out on the floors with special activities for our visitors from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.!The Milwaukee Public Museum has a representative collection of Lacandon material culture, totaling 113 objects and numerous photographs. Peter Thornquist collected the majority of the artifacts while visiting a Lacandon village in Metzabok, Mexico in 1979. The items were collected with funds provided by the Friends of the Museum and the Milwaukee Public Museum. The collection contains information on dress as well as domestic and religious life, including many unique and perishable objects such as feather hair ornaments, seed necklaces, and photographs.
