Earth is a planet born of fire. For billions of years, volcanoes have helped create the world we know. With over 500 active volcanoes, the Earth is bursting at the seams with these forces of mass construction. The story of volcanoes is the story of the planet’s creation, and the story of us.
With intrepid explorer Carsten Peter, dodge boulders at the edge of an active volcano in Indonesia, descend to a lava lake in Vanuatu, and visit the incredible mineral deposit fields in Ethiopia. Travel across the globe to see the archaeological ghost town of Pompeii and witness the devastating effects of the recent Kilauea eruption in Hawaii. Audiences will be on the edge of their seats as they discover molten worlds and exploding craters in this adrenaline-filled, immersive experience!
These 50-minute, guided explorations take place wihtin the museums galleries. Each program includes hands-on, interactive experiences connecting exhibits and topics to your classroom curriculum.

Proof of Concept for Holographic DisplayThe Milwaukee Public Museum is planning a major new exhibition centered on ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome, utilizing not only current information and interpretations, but new technologies beyond traditional presentation methods.
The Milwaukee Public Museum acquired the Howard collection, consisting of over 1,500 items in 1985, thanks to the generosity of Ethel Herzfeld, a devoted friend of the Museum. James Howard, a cultural anthropologist, was born in 1925 in Redfield, South Dakota. He enjoyed the respect and acceptance of Indian people acquainted with him and participated regularly in powwows throughout the Plains area.
In the course of his studies he became an accomplished singer and powwow dancer, and assembled a large personal collection of outfits. The collection ranges from rare, old styles already out of vogue in the 1930s to fashions current at the time of Howard's death in 1982. Clothing from several different tribes and regions was obtained mainly for powwows. The concentration on men's powwow dress demonstrates Howard's fascination with the more elaborate male dance outfits. This collection is one of the largest and best contemporary powwow collections in the world. What is incredibly valuable is that Howard recorded who made each item and when and where he collected them.
