Today, Aztalan is a state park managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources whose goal is to preserve and interpret the site. Through archaeological investigations and historical work, many of the mysteries of Aztalan have been solved, but many questions still remain. For example: Who were the people who occupied Aztalan before the Mississippians? Why did the Mississippians come to Aztalan? What was the relationship of these people to others, such as the Late Woodland Effigy Mound builders and later, the Oneota? What caused the collapse of Aztalan?

What is a BioBlitz?

A BioBlitz is part contest, part festival, part educational event, and part scientific endeavor where MPM brings together a group of scientists in a race against time to see how many species they can count in a 24-hour celebration of biodiversity in a Wisconsin natural area.

The public is invited to observe the scientists’ activities, to interact with them, and to participate in other activities that are presented by the Museum and a host of invited nature-oriented organizations.

Suriname and the Maroons

Suriname, originally a Dutch colony, has been independent since 1975. This small country, located on the northeast coast of South America, has cultural attributes more in common with Caribbean countries.

Fredrick S. Perkins

Fredrick S. Perkins was born in December 1832 in Trenton Falls, New York. Four years later, in 1836, his father Origen Perkins moved the family to Burlington, Wisconsin, where they established the first residential home in township, as well as a log tavern and general store. At the age of twenty, Fredrick went to New York City and enrolled in the American Academy of Design, where he honed his skills as a talented artist.

The Mexican Kickapoo are a band related to the original Kickapoo tribe that was first encountered by Europeans in the Great Lakes region during the 1600s.

With an innate will to preserve their heritage and a determination to keep out foreign influence, the Kickapoo embarked on a remarkable 250 year migration to their current location just outside the village of Muzquiz in the state of Coahuila, Mexico.
