Bug Patrol Volunteer

What is the Bug Patrol?
Insects are the most common animal on our planet, and they perform a vast number of important functions in our ecosystem. In the Bugs Alive! exhibit on the first floor, located east of the Butterfly Vivarium, there are multiple displays of live bugs in their habitats. Bug Patrol volunteers help teach visitors about these different creatures by helping them handle live insects like walking sticks or hissing cockroaches. Engaging visitors in this way also allows the opportunity to teach them things such as how bugs can aerate the soil, pollinate blossoms, control insect and plant pests, and other interesting factual information.

Why is this job important?
The good done by beneficial insects far outweighs any bad caused by a few pest species. Appreciation of this fact will help individuals better understand the need for these creatures that are often times considered “undesirable” or “icky.” This chance to give a different perspective on nature is a vital part of the museum’s mission.
