The Milwaukee Public Museum is Wisconsin's most visited museum and one of the country's first natural history museums. This institution has inspired curious minds since 1884. Now, the Museum is entering its most exciting chapter yet: the opening of a brand-new building, the Nature & Culture Museum of Wisconsin, coming spring 2027.
Over the past four years, generous donors from across the state have donated funds for our new home — and the building is nearly complete. Now, as we install the new exhibits, YOU can help us reach the finish line together.
With your support, visitors can:
- Step inside shops and homes from Milwaukee's history
- See life-size dinosaurs and animals in epic scenes
- Explore ecosystems and cultures throughout Wisconsin and the world
- Engage with immersive, interactive exhibits
- Travel the universe in a new state-of-the-art planetarium
- Enjoy nature in our community gardens, live butterfly vivarium, and rooftop terrace
Why New? Why Now?
The Museum's current building, which is owned by Milwaukee County, faces a maintenance backlog of more than $100 million. The County does not have the funds to make these critical repairs. As a result, the Museum's exhibits and priceless artifacts are at risk of damage from water leaks, structural issues, and major fluctuations in temperature and humidity.
Simultaneously, elevators and escalators from the 1960s are too small to accommodate today's strollers and wheelchairs, and outdated parts often break down, resulting in long wait times.
The new Nature & Culture Museum of Wisconsin has been thoughtfully and sustainably designed to last, with modern-day amenities, state-of-the-art storage areas for millions of delicate objects, and a new ownership structure where the Museum owns the building, relieving the County of all maintenance expenses.
