Join us all week for the Wisconsin Science Festival!
Milwaukee Public Museum is excited to participate in this year’s Wisconsin Science Festival, a statewide celebration with activities for people throughout Wisconsin. Stop by our Second Floor “Science Lab” in Uihlein Hall to put your science skills to use.
Activities will take place October 16-21 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.*
Things to do in the Science Lab:
- Practice your scientist skills and get to know the world around you up close… very close! This mini-workshop will teach you how to use a microscope while also diving deep into life, including you.
- Stop by our Educator-led tables and take a deeper dive into the who, what, when, where, and why of science. Get to the root of the study of plants and make your own plant press to take home.
Docent Tour
Take a docent-led tour, “How we Know.” Scientists and researchers from around the world use specimens and artifacts in MPM’s collections to learn about nature, cultures, and history. Learn about some of our collections and how we came to know what we know. Tours will be led each day at 1 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. Meet at the top of the Grand Staircase on the First Floor.
Family Fun Day Saturday
In addition to the above Science Lab activities, take part in a dissection workshop as part of Family Fun Day Saturday:
What do owls eat for lunch? Find out in this hands-on pellet dissection workshop! We’ll explore the roles different animals play in the food web while also learning about the anatomy of owls and the critters they love to eat. 45-minute free dissection programs will be offered at 10:30, 12:30, and 2:30 p.m. No reservation needed.
Science on Tap
"Devoured Worlds: Investigating Planetary Ingestion Events"
Melinda Soares-Furtado, NASA Hubble Postdoctoral Fellow, UW-Madison and Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Sometimes, stars cannibalize the worlds orbiting them! In several billion years, our own inner rocky bodies will be consumed as our sun grows nearly 100 times in diameter. In this talk, learn about the search for cannibal stars in the Milky Way.
About the Speaker
Dr. Melinda Soares-Furtado is a NASA Hubble Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Among her research interests are planetary engulfment events. Her research team is currently investigating the chemical signatures that these devoured worlds may impart upon their host stars.
