MPM has had a long and illustrious history, but much of it has focused on the local men who were instrumental in its creation. This presentation by Dawn Scher Thomae, Curator of Anthropology Collections, will highlight some of the many trailblazing women who helped to build our world-renowned Museum and collections.

Visit the newly refreshed exhibit Tian Chao, or “heavenly dynasty,” a selection of objects from MPM’s China Decorative Arts collection. See an intricately carved elephant tusk from the mid-19th century, a striking Late Qing Dynasty porcelain table top displaying nine colorful dragons, and other priceless and unique artifacts.

There were both games of dexterity and games of chance, and betting was also customary. In addition, there were games for children. Later, modern cards and card games were adopted from Whites. Games were played by men, by women, and by the children, but only rarely did the two sexes, as adults, play together.
SPARK! programs are designed for people in the early to mid-stages of memory loss to visit with their family, care partners, or group facility.
First, when they are extended federal recognition, they can establish tribal governments that possess a measure of sovereignty. Non-recognized tribes can form tribal organizations but lack sovereign powers. Second, federally recognized tribes can have their reservation lands placed in trust. This means that their land is protected by the federal government from being purchased or taken by non-Indians.
