The focus of The Third Planet is the concept of plate tectonics, a now well-known concept that, at the time of the exhibit hall's construction, was quite revolutionary.

Stockbridge-Munsee

Stockbridge-Munsee Culture

Originally, the Native people who made up the Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe came from Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania. During the 1770s, Stockbridge -- a mixed Native and White Christian community -- was formed in western Massachusetts, largely drawing on members of the Mahikan or Mohican tribe which occupied eastern New York, western Massachusetts, and parts of western Connecticut.

Invertebrate Zoology

The Milwaukee Public Museum had its origin in 1883 with a group of collections presented to the City of Milwaukee by the Natural History Society of Wisconsin (NHSW) that included "1,900 Marine invertebrates, dry" and “2,690 Insects.”

The collections have been managed under various departments over the years, most recently as Insect and Non-Insect Collections in the Invertebrate Zoology Department.

California

The California region includes most of the modern state, except for a portion of the north and east, which can be considered parts of other regions. Californian cradles from the Pomo (4) and Hupa (3) are included in MPM’s collection. The cradles of these groups are known by two names. They are called “sitting” cradles, because the base of the cradle forms a seat for the child, and they are also called “cradle baskets” because of their construction. This type of cradle is unique to the region.
