Director of IES Position

The Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM) is seeking a Director of Information and Electronic Systems. The Director of IES defines and implements the strategic plan for all MPM information systems, exhibit audio and video presentation and conference systems, sound systems, paging systems, telephone and 2-way radio systems, voice/data networks, and the Museum’s website. This position is responsible for procurement of all computers, systems, software and other computer–related technologies. It also ensures the safety, security, reliability, and usability of these technologies for the Museum complying with applicable laws and regulations. This position acts as head of the Project Management Office (PMO) in a clearinghouse role for major Museum projects and processes. The Director of IES has supervisory responsibility for 5 staff members, and reports directly to the President/CEO.

The candidate must be able to work independently as well as part of a team. Proven dependability and excellent organizational skills a must. Excellent written and oral communication skills required. The candidate must have proven leadership abilities and excellent people skills. The position works in all areas of MPM so the candidate must have ability to deal effectively with varying situations and end-user skill levels.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year college or university specializing in computer science, business management, or a related area. At least ten years of experience working as a professional in information technology systems with supervisory responsibility. Training in Project Management techniques and Process Mapping. Experience in developing strategies for enterprise technologies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Determine the overall MPM technology requirements, establish and direct the long-term strategy for technology and develop tactical implementation plans for technologies used for exhibits, presentations, website, e-commerce, and staff productivity. Determine pan-museum needs for each fiscal year, budget and procure all technologies according to the approved budget.
  • Establish effective goals and objectives to manage five technicians in the completion of action plans, initiatives and programs meeting the needs of staff and the MPM strategic agenda. 
  • Develop and enforce standards and policies that result in fewer technical impediments to cross-program communication. Develop and enforce standards that result is greater security and reliability for all technologies. Comply with IT/financial audit recommendations and required regulatory agencies for the Payment Card Industry (PCI) and Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as relates to system selection, data security, system and network design.
  • Develop strategic alliances with resellers, consultants, specialists, other museums, and staff to ensure continuity, stability, effectiveness and appropriateness of services and systems. Monitor the progress of major federal and state-funded IT projects, paying particular attention to and participating in any developing programs that impact MPM. Communicate IT plans, policies, and technology trends throughout the organization.
  • Broker and coordinate outsourced IT services along with in-house services to further outreach programs, public programs, education-related missions, exhibit interpretive technologies and/or revenue generation.
  • Develop, administer, and manage the Information and Electronic Systems budget to ensure fiscal responsibility and that expenditures support the MPM’s strategic agenda. Consult with all departments on needs and capital expenditures for each fiscal year and deploy standardized computing platforms based on a five-year lifecycle. Consult with Museum exhibits staff in developing, procuring and implementing interactive computer systems and programs for public use in permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, multiply, subtract, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret business graphics.

Technical Skills: Information Systems Skills: Established working knowledge of Windows/Linux operating systems, VMWare and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, office productivity applications, museum-specific CMS, multi-media kiosk applications, website management, centralized telephone equipment, 2-way radios, audio and paging sound systems and network infrastructure (wired and wireless), PCI and HIPAA compliance. Exhibit Technologies Skills:  Digital Video and Audio delivery and video presentation and video conference technologies.
